Azure Resource Manager (ARM) Sample Deployment

Related to my previous post Start your Azure experience with Azure Resource Manager, the well known Keith Mayer has created an excellent working example of putting ARM to use provisioning the following sample IaaS deployment:

18 Steps for End-to-End IaaS Provisioning in the Cloud with Azure Resource Manager (ARM), PowerShell and Desired State Configuration (DSC)

It’s exciting to see this technology maturing and how we can use this to build our future services.

Some interesting observations from the post:

  • All of the build uses PowerShell to build up the environment – I’d love to see how this would look in a JSON template uploaded through the ARM API directly (looking forward to a future post from Keith covering this!)
  • The inclusion of Network Security Groups (NSG) in the build will help more people understand how these can be implemented, but it would be great if Microsoft provide a central management UI to view and manage NSGs across a subscription
  • Awesome that this also includes the configuration of a Site-to-Site VPN – essential at this stage as Microsoft doesn’t support Azure ExpressRoute connectivity for virtual networks created in ARM yet (please hurry up and provide this)

I think I’ll be running through this in my test environment soon and start working out how we can translate our ASM deployments to ARM!
